From a farming family in North Canterbury, New Zealand, Owen was always interested in art and is a painter and printmaker. He spent some time in Japan, working at ski resorts and sport shops. Then he moved on to London and did some travelling before returning to New Zealand, having decided to become an actor. Owen began with some amateur drama productions in Christchurch, then moved to Auckland, where he enrolled in Raymond Hawthorne’s renowned drama classes. Hawthorne encouraged him to attend the Performing Arts School at Unitec, and in 1998, Owen graduated from the school with a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts. Since then he has been a regular on TV, stage and silver screen in his native New Zealand.
